In 2016, organizers affiliated with UNESCO Chair in Bioethics undertook the realization of the first Philosophy Day in Slovakia commemorating World Philosophy Day in partnership with the Slovak Commission for UNESCO. UNESCO commemorates World Philosophy Day every third Thursday of November since 2005.

Since 2017, Philosophy Day SK (formerly Philosophy Day/Night) operates as a full-featured festival of philosophy with its base at Wave – center for independent culture at Hlavná street 121, Prešov. Since 2021, Athens upon Torysa, CSO coordinates its organization with various partners. Organizing team consists of active philosophers, philosophy enthusiasts and academics who aspire to promote independent philosophical thinking and its all-society importance and increasing the awareness of philosophy and its place in contemporary culture.

The intentions of these events are to emphasize and honor the contribution of philosophy to various spheres of human thought, as well as to value its irreplacible role in the cultivating processes of personality and society, or in relation to creation of cultural and individual paradigms. Dramaturgy of the festival consists of public lectures, text seminars and interactive workshops offering the fundamentals, as well as the specifics, of philosophical, ethical, or aesthetical thought to the public in an inviting and informal atmosphere.

From 2022 onward, the festival is being supported using public funding by Slovak Arts Council

In 2023, Wave – centre for independent culture ended its business in the centre of Prešov, so the festival had to change its home location. Starting with vol. VIII, the festival’s new base is at culture centre Christiania, Hlavná street 105, Prešov.
